W.P. Griffin Inc. is a family owned and operated farming
business located in Elmsdale, in the western part of Prince Edward Island. PEI, the
smallest province of Canada, is sometimes called Spud
Island, with 94,800 acres of potatoes harvested in
2006.
John Griffin, President of W.P. Griffin Inc.,
acts as General Manager in charge of administration and
oversees the farming and packaging operations. Peter
Griffin is the Vice-President and Operations Manager in
charge of the packaging warehouse,
and the farming and cattle operations.
W.P. Griffin Inc. presently farms 1,100 acres of potatoes,
950 acres of grain, 650 acres of hay and has 350 beef
cattle in a finishing feed lot. The company is divided
into three divisions:
Farming Operation,
Packaging Warehouse and Cattle Operation. For

Wilfred P. Griffin, founder of W.P. Griffin Inc.,
started working in the potato industry in 1947 at the
age of 19. He started as business manager and by 1958,
he was the sole proprietor and incorporated in 1969.

Wilfred Patrick Griffin was born May 24, 1928 to Thomas
and Mary Griffin in Brocton, Prince Edward Island. He
graduated St. Dunstan's in 1946. He worked as a teacher
but in 1947 became involved in the potato industry at
the age of 19. He started as a business manager for
Ronald McKenna and by 1958 became sole proprietor. In
1969 he incorporated his business to W. P. Griffin
Incorporated as it is known today.
Wilfred married Mary Ellen (Marie) Gaudet on Nov. 10,
1962. Marie worked in the office from 1967 to 1997.
Marie worked side-by-side with Wilfred as the business
grew from 100 acres to a 1000 acres of potatoes per
year. Together they raised a family of four children,
Barbara, Peter, John and Eleanor.
Their sons John and Peter joined them in family business
as they expanded their farming business to included a
modern packing facility capable of packaging washed or
unwashed potatoes in a wide variety of packages.
